Due to an upcoming retirement, the Northern Midlands Council are seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced people to join the Community and Development team as a Building and Compliance Officer. The position will be offered on a permanent full-time basis based at our office in Longford, Tasmania.

About the role
This role will see the successful candidate use their extensive knowledge of building or similar construction trade to ensure that all buildings constructed within the municipal area are built in accordance with the Building Act 2016 and all other relevant legislation. You will also monitor sites to ensure that work is compliant with planning and building permit conditions imposed on development applications.
You will use your excellent communication, negotiation, and problem solving skills when interacting with the community on compliance matters, including dealing with issues of investigation and enforcement.
You will be supported into this role by the current existing Building and Compliance Officers who will provide support, training and guidance as you develop in the role. Previous experience in a similar role would be advantageous, however not essential. The successful applicant will either have the required Building Permit Authority, or be prepared to undertake the training as part of the role.

There is an administrative component to the role, so you will need to have good all round computer skills and literacy, proven ability to prioritise and deal with competing deadlines, and diligent about record keeping and paperwork.
You will be a self-motivated professional, who shows initiative, can problem solve and has good time management skills. In addition, you will also have excellent verbal and written communication skills and have strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
