About the NSW Ombudsman

The NSW Ombudsman is an independent integrity agency that pursues fairness for the people of NSW. Through complaint handling, review, monitoring, investigation, advice, training and community education, we seek to improve the administration and delivery of public and community services in NSW.

We are currently looking for a diverse range of people who share our commitment to the public interest. We are looking for people who want to make a real difference by working in a purpose driven and ethical organisation.

We are building a workforce that is as diverse as the people we serve. We seek people who will bring their whole self and their experiences to our work. We are particularly keen to hear from people with lived experiences relevant to our work, people with disability, LGBTQIA+ people, First Nations people, and people from various culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

We encourage anyone from any diverse background to apply and join an organisation that makes a difference to the people of NSW.

The Role

The Deputy Ombudsman, Health Administration role has been created having regard to issues raised in the Legislative Council's Portfolio Committee No 2 report into health outcomes and access to health and hospital services in rural, regional and remote NSW that was tabled in May 2022.

It is a highly visible role, which will promote awareness and understanding of the work of the Ombudsman in the health sector, increase the Ombudsman's accessibility and visibility to public health workers and health customers, monitor systemic issues of public administration in the health sector and work collaboratively across all the Ombudsman's office functional areas to ensure coordinated and impactful exercise of all statutory functions that impact the health sector - including complaints handling, investigations, public interest disclosures oversight, Aboriginal program monitoring and child death reviews.

The Deputy Ombudsman will develop the Health Administration Unit comprising four new ongoing positions to be led by a dedicated Deputy Ombudsman. This unit is to support enhanced capacity, expertise, effort and focus on health administration, working with and through the Ombudsman's existing statutory functions. The Deputy Ombudsman will need to work closely with others involved in adjacent complaint, incident reporting and/or investigative systems (including NSW Health and the Clinical Excellence Commission, the Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) and the Coroner).
