About the Opportunity

The primary purpose of the role is to be the leading legal advisor to the South Australian Government Financing Authority (SAFA), specialising in commercial and financial transactions and advice. The Legal Counsel will oversee and provide high level advice to Government on complex and sensitive matters, and have extensive liaison and work closely with SAFA Executives. The Legal Counsel will be a member of the management team of the Commercial, Environment and Native Title Section of the Crown Solicitor’s Office, will provide professional leadership, and develop and maintain a culture of client focused service delivery. 

Applicants are required to have significant experience at a senior level advising on a diverse range of highly complex and sensitive legal matters concerning commercial and finance transactions and advice. It would be beneficial to have experience in financial markets and insurance arrangements, including in respect to capital markets, and to be in a position to identify risks and opportunities for SAFA. Applicants are required to have considerable knowledge of statutes and general legal issues affecting the South Australian Government and knowledge of the CSO and its operations.

 

About the Business

The Crown Solicitor's Office, through the Attorney-General, provides legal services to government, Ministers, agencies and departments, including legal advice, representation before courts and tribunals, negotiating commercial contracts, drafting and production of legal documents, counsel for the conduct of summary prosecutions and Magistrates' appeals, native title claim management, land conveyancing and investigation.

Special Conditions for Employment

Employment is dependent upon a National Police Certificate clearance that the AGD finds satisfactory. Successful applicants will be provided further information if an interview is requested. Forms are not to be lodged directly with SA Police (SAPOL) under any circumstances and any fees incurred by applicants in doing so will not be recoverable from the AGD. 

  • Some out of hours work may be required. 
  • Some interstate and intrastate travel may be required.
  • Applicants are required to be currently admitted as a practitioner of the Supreme Court of South Australia or eligible to be admitted.
