The opportunity
The Assistant Winemaker is responsible for assisting the winemaking team in the planning and implementation of winemaking and cellar operations, a hands-on role managing cellar operations and ensuring cleanliness, safety and quality are maintained at all times. Involvement in allocation and blending tastings to build experience and understanding of stylistic direction of winery.

Your responsibilities will include:

Leadership and Culture

  • Follow a process based approach and use risk-based thinking with a lifecycle perspective to deliver customer and statutory requirements
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the management systems and processes applicable to this role

Health, Safety, Quality and Environment Management Systems

  • Provide leadership and ensure compliance with all Health, Safety, Quality and Environment Management System policies and procedures
  • Actively engage and participate with company quality, health, safety, environment and well-being initiatives and encourage the involvement of all stakeholders
  • Actively engage and participate in company environmental protection initiatives and the prevention of pollution

Winery

  • Be an active member of the Technical Committee, providing operational feedback, reports, and other inputs as required, and develop understanding of other functions in the technical departments
  • Be a key member of the Tasting Committee, contributing at a high level to all wine tasting/blending sessions
  • Maintain technical knowledge regarding production of wine to the highest level. This includes remaining abreast of current technologies that may lead to quality or cost improvements

Cellar Management

  • Manage all aspects of winery operations as directed by the Senior Winemaker or Winemaker
  • Ensure wine quality is maintained to the standards specified by Senior Winemaker or Winemaker
  • Manage wine taint with zero tolerance.
  • Lead the efforts in preventing all contaminations, with direct responsibility for plant and equipment sanitation and general hygiene
  • Coordinate with Winemaker the blending, stabilisation and filtration processes

Vintage Period

  • Participate in recruitment of vintage casuals
    • Conduct induction training
    • Liaise with Winemaker to plan casuals roster
  • Coordinate daily juice, ferment sampling and record keeping
  • Coordinate general winery routine including training of staff if required
  • Actively participate in daily and routine tastings


About you

  • Oenology Degree or equivalent (essential)
  • Practical winemaking experience for at least 4 vintages (essential)
  • 2+ vintages in Margaret River region (essential)
  • Global experience in diverse winemaking regions (essential)
  • Science Degree - specialising in Microbiology highly regarded

The salary range of this position is $75,000 - $80,000 p.a. excluding superannuation
